Chairmanship of HDS

- Hrvoje Hegedusic -
president of Croatian
Composer Society

The Croatian Composers Society (HDS) is a modern and well-equipped professional organisation which gathers around 200 regular members and 3500 associate members (composers, musicologists, publicists...). It is a powerful artistic organisation, which, due to its knowledge, creative and organisational capabilities, as well as artistic connections with ensembles, institutions and individuals throughout the world, influences the musical life in Croatia considerably. Its primary aim is further promotion of musical life in Croatia and the recognition of Croatian music at home and abroad.

The CCS is responsible for several musical events of utmost importance: the Music Biennale Zagreb, representing not only a window to the contemporary world of music, but also a breakthrough in world musical trends; the Days of Croatian Music, focus primarily on Croatian musical heritage, and the International Music Festival is dedicated to certain musical problems or achievements and includes the participation of various ensembles, soloists and experts in different fields from Mediterranean countries, as well as from countries of the Alpne-Danube-Adriatic region. Apart from these festivals, the CCS is also responsible for festivals like Zagrebfest, the International Jazz Days and the Spring Jazz Festival.

The rich publishing activity of the CCS is reflected in the hundreds of scores in the Ars Croatica and Light Melodies editions, as well as on the CDs of contemporary Croatian music released recently. It is also worth pointing out that the CCS issues its own journal, Cantus, which is currently the only edition of this kind in Croatia.

The Croatian Composers Society is a member of several international organisations, like CISAC (International Conference of Authors and Composers Associations), BIEM (International Office for Mechanical Publications), ISCM (International Society for Contemporary Music), ECPNM (European Association for New Music Promoters) and Culture dei mari (Cultural Association of Mediterranean Countries).

Various ensembles of young musicians have worked within the CCS (the Zagreb Chamber Orchestra, the Windstrings, the Zagreb Piano Trio). Together with the Croatian Recording Association, the Croatian Musicians Union and the CRT, the Croatian Composers Society is the co-founder of the Croatian Music Award, Porin, an artistic and business project aimed at the promotion of Croatian discography and music.
